Are we there yet?

Well, this is my first Blog adventure, so please excuse my naivete'. Hopefully, this will have lots of great dialogs and ideas for all of us to use. Can't wait 'til we get there. Thanks for your help Mark M.

External Access Workgroup

Representatives of key technologies met on December 11 to review the various methods used to gain access to CCHS network resources from external locations.
The methods under discussion were:
  • Milhouse VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • DoIT VPN Token
  • CCHS Extranet
The "Milhouse" method, named for the server that manages access rights, is the way most CCHS employees get access to the network from their home computers. Employees may get access via this method by submitting a request for "Remote Access" using the System Access tab in iHELP. For more information, see the Information Systems homepage: User Support/Administrative Systems/VPN-External Access.

The DoIT VPN Token requires a separate piece of hardware from DoIT, but this method is used by some IS staff because it enables them to perform system maintenance tasks remotely.

The Extranet does not yet exist, but it is being developed to provide access to specific systems for external contract providers and community partners. Current targets for Extranet access include BHCi, IRIS, and WESS.

Kicking the Tires on Blogger

A comment on the previous post complained that the link to the team site didn't work. Imagine my embarrassment!

A quick inspection suggested that it was simply a bad link, so I went in and edited the post to correct the link syntax. Upon re-publishing the post, however, I found I still had the same error -- the link had not changed!

After several more attempts to correct it, I came to the conclusion that blogger is somehow truncating the URL when I attempt to attach it to blog text as link.

So I tried pasting the link text directly into the blog. This finally worked, although it still took multiple attempts to get the full URL to stick. But the URL still doesn't work if you click it in the blog, possibly because the address is broken into two lines. However, if you select and copy the entire URL from the blog, you can paste it into your browser address bar, and then it works.

I will try to do some research on Blogger to see if this is a known bug, er, feature. But if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

UPDATE
I went back and edited the previous post in HTML mode, and now the link seems to work. I guess the GUI tools are kind of sketchy.

Update on the iSITE Redesign Project

We have finished interview candidates for the iSITE redesign project, and we will begin our final deliberations to select a contractor after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Members of the iSITE Users' Group can review the contractor candidates and their proposals on the team site. If you're not yet a member of the Users' Group and you'd like to get involved, please email me.

Easy enough to get to....

Except for the browser issue, pretty easy to use interface...

Greater than the sum of its parts...

One of the main purposes of this blog, from my point of view, is to help weave together diverse strands of technology into a robust rope that we can all use to pull ourselves up to a higher level of performance.

Am I getting too metaphorical? Here is a specific example:

Steve Dinning's development group, the A-Team, has created an application called Train Track that the Personnel division uses to manage employee training records for required courseware like Harassment Prevention training. This achievement led Personnel to request an enhancement: an online form that would enable users to self-enroll in these classes. So far so good: this points towards a valuable collaboration between the A-Team and Mike Dickson's iTeam, which is responsible for iSITE development.

But then a third player arrived on the scene: yesterday I became aware that the hospital is interested in contracting with an online provider of training programs for the nursing staff. Furthermore, their preferred product, MC Strategies, includes an online registration system that might be extended to include enrollment in other courses, such as the Personnel offerings.

I only learned of this new product by chance, but this knowledge could enable us to combine these two separate initiatives to save both time and effort and potentially provide a better outcome for everyone -- not only Nursing and Personnel, but all of CCHS.

The point is: if we can effectively share our disparate work efforts on this blog, we may be able to identify additional opportunities for synergy.

Stay tuned for another post on IS training initiatives...

Yes I Can

I had no trouble getting here and posting this post. Noel, you have to configure Lotus to use a real browser. Otherwise, there is no end to the trouble.

Joining in the fray

Wow. It was a challenge getting in here. The first attempt crashed my Lotus Notes. The second attempt kept giving me javascript errors... Lotus Notes provides a junk browser. Copied and pasted the url into IE and all is well.

It's great seeing this blog get started. Thanks Marc. I hope it proves useful over time.

View from the Bridge

Welcome!

This blog is a "proof of concept" for the use of blogs as a communication tool for Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS). The intranet development team ("iTeam") has heard whispers of rumors that users within Health Services would like blogging functionality on iSITE (the CCHS intranet), but the existing internal plumbing in iSITE does not yet support blogs. However, external sources like Blogger can be easily integrated to bring blogging functionality to iSITE.

We are launching this blog on behalf of Information Systems to (a) show that it can be done, (b) show how it can be done, and (c) see how useful it might be -- does anyone care? Will they read it? Will they post to it?

The blog is called "The Bridge" because we hope it will be like "an upper deck where a ship is steered and the captain stands" -- a place where IS staff and our collaborative partners can come to get an overview of the direction that information technology (IT) is taking in CCHS. And we also expect it to be a bridge in the more typical sense -- "a structure that allows people to cross an obstacle": in other words a tool to close the communications gaps among IS staff and stakeholders.

Initially, the blog will feature posts from IS directors and supervisors, but all IS staff and CCHS visitors will be free to comment on posts. All comments will be moderated for "appropriateness".

If other IS staff members are interested in creating original posts, please contact Marc Miyashiro to request an account. If other CCHS communities are interested in creating their own blogs, please contact Marc, the IS Information Architect, for further assistance.
